Financial Resiliency

David’s Story

Growing up in a small town in Nebraska, I joined the Air Force two years after high school. College wasn’t in my plans and, after losing my job, I decided to enlist. That began a 20-year career. Life in the Air Force was tough, especially working on the flight line. The demanding schedule took a toll on my two marriages, both of which led to painful divorces and custody struggles.

I moved to Hawaii upon my retirement, but when my second marriage ended, I realized that living in Hawaii was a struggle, financially. Eventually, I followed my ex-wife back to Texas so that I could be closer to my children.

This past winter, I sat in a nearly empty apartment, battling depression, and struggling financially. I finally decided to seek help and my therapist recommended Catholic Charities. I had no idea what they did, but I walked in without an appointment, and Janis, my case manager, welcomed me warmly.

Janis and I reviewed my finances and set clear goals. The first step was tracking my budget, which revealed areas where I could save money. This tangible plan was eye-opening. Catholic Charities even provided groceries during our initial meetings, a gesture that meant the world to me.

My primary goal was to afford a trip to see my kids, starting with my daughter’s graduation. Catholic Charities helped me create a plan to save enough for an airline ticket.

Janis assisted me in booking flights since navigating the internet on my phone was challenging. The support I received was incredible.

My secondary goals were to improve my overall financial situation and computer use. Janis has helped with all of these.

"Thanks to Catholic Charities and Janis, I have hope for the future and have a renewed relationship with my family."

I began taking computer literacy classes and have almost reached my goal of having $1,000 in my savings account. These accomplishments have relieved a burden I’ve carried for years.

When I finally told my daughter I would attend her graduation, her excitement was overwhelming. Our relationship has grown stronger since then. Seeing her and sharing that emotional moment was one I won’t forget.

Janis has shown me how to set goals, socialize and improve my quality of life. Her support has been unwavering and she always knows the right person to assist me.

Accepting help is hard, especially for veterans, but Janis showed me that good things happen when you do. Thanks to Catholic Charities and Janis, I have hope for the future and have a renewed relationship with my family.
