Stevie’s journey is a testament to resilience and the power of community support. Diagnosed with an Intellectual and Developmental Disability (IDD), Stevie faced an unimaginable loss when both his parents passed away within a year of each other in 2018 and 2019. Living in the small town of Cisco, Stevie found himself without a legal guardian and very financially vulnerable.
Despite inheriting $50,000 in a special needs trust, Stevie’s extended family mismanaged nearly half of it while serving as his temporary guardians. He was then kicked out and left homeless. By 2021, nearly half of the trust was depleted.
In 2023, Stevie attended a community dinner and was connected to Catholic Charities Fort Worth (CCFW). CCFW immediately stepped in to provide the empathy and support Stevie desperately needed. Initially, they helped him manage his utilities while he lived in government-subsidized apartments.
CCFW worked tirelessly to stabilize Stevie’s finances, addressing his immediate needs
and laying the groundwork for his long-term independence. They navigated legal challenges, managed the remaining trust funds, and ensured Stevie received his Social Security benefits and food stamps.
CCFW also supported Stevie’s dream of starting his own business. Inspired by a hospital visit where he saw patients without visitors, Stevie created Big Country Baskets. Each basket is a labor of love and a step toward self-sufficiency. The support from CCFW allowed Stevie to focus on time management and other essential skills for running his business.
Stevie’s success shows that, with the right support, anyone can overcome adversity and achieve independence. Stevie’s story is far from over, but with the continued support from CCFW and his own determination, the future looks promising.
